Emmy for Richard Harrow?

Question: Any Emmy buzz for Jack Huston as Richard Harrow on Boardwalk Empire? I know you weren't the biggest fan of the show this season, but I find Huston's performance stunning. Every time he takes the screen — whether it's romancing under the boardwalk or ruthlessly shooting up gangsters at Gillian's — I can't help but watch and cheer for him. He's come so far along from the guy ready to kill himself in the woods. If not an Emmy for him, would any of the other Boardwalk cast be contenders this year? — Danielle 

 Matt Roush: I'm sure there will be buzz, and deservedly so. He is one of the few engaging characters left on the series, and this season gave Huston a chance to shine in both of Richard's guises: as a tragic/romantic figure and as a stone-cold killer (the massacre at Gillian's was a remarkable set piece). But the competition in the ranks of supporting drama actors is always fierce, and his performance, while haunting, is also so quiet and contained (even when he's being a one-man army) that it may be overlooked. In terms of likely nominees, while I'm over Nucky and find him a less compelling figure by the season, Steve Buscemi being the high-profile star of an HBO series always makes him a contender. And while I mostly found this season's villain Gyp Rosetti to be laughably cartoonish, there's no doubt that Bobby Cannavale fully committed to playing this psycho fearlessly in a huge (possibly too huge) performance, so I wouldn't be surprised if he's singled out this year.

My Favorite Emmy's 2012 Moment

Emmy Snubs (in my humble opinion...)

Would have loved to see nominations in some capacity for...
Fringe. I know it's sci fi, but we've all accepted Game of Thrones! Can't John Noble or Anna Torv get some love?
Justified. This drama has me at the edge of my seat every week. Raylan, Boyd Crowder, the opening credits. Something desereved a nomination.
Wilfred. It's a smart, dark comedy, which obviously doesn't play well against LOL shows like Modern Family. But come on! It's original.
Happy Endings. It's at least funnier than Veep, IMHO.

I'm surprised these guys didn't get nominations...

Matt LeBlanc on Episodes. I don't watch, but feel like critics are raving about him every week in EW and TV Guide. 

Hugh Laurie on House. He's been a regular in the drama category, but was snubbed in his final year. 

John Slattery on Mad Men. I always think he is brilliant, but that LSD trip this season? Awesome work. 

I think it is weird that...

They moved Missing to a mini-series, when I'm pretty sure it was just a series that got cancelled. 

SNL is in the regular comedy categories and not variety show. I guess they did away with that variety/musical category and weren't sure where to put it. Just think it is hard to compare the work of actors playing one character/story over the course or a season vs actors playing multiple characters/stories each week. 

Also worth noting...

Not a lot of play for network TV, particularly in the drama category. Ouch. 

American Idol didn't get nominated. Double ouch.

Mad Men's The Other Woman or Commissions and Fees should win this one. Breathtaking episodes. 

You'll notice I left out some categories - directing, for example. My problem is, I don't know enough about those categories. Bad TV lover, I know. I just know that I would end up picking my favorite shows just because they are my favorite. 


And as far as movie/mini-series, I only want American Horror Story (that's a mini series?) or Hatfields and McCoys to win. All the awards. And I like all the 'variety show' (aka late night type shows) nominees, so I have no opinion really about that. 

Also, shout out to Hell on Wheels nomination for main title sequence! I love opening credits. 

Emmy's 2011.

Sorry, I'm not going to give a full Emmy recap or anything. I actually thought it was a pretty lackluster show. Not Jane's fault, her hosting was fine. It's just that when Modern Family keeps winning.... it doesn't make for a very exciting 3 hours.

I was excited to see a few big surprises last night - Margo for Justified (she was a-mah-zing as Mags Bennett last season. Seriously.); Peter Dinklage for Game of Thrones (I don't care if his character is a 'good guy' or 'bad guy', he's my fave); Kyle Chandler finally gettin some Friday Night Lights love;  and Melissa McCarthy for Bridesmaids Mike and Molly (okay seriously. She should have thanked Kristen Wiig for casting her in Bridesmaids because no one thought she was funny before that.)

Also love love loved the Mad Men segment in Jane's opener. BRILLIANT. (I couldn't find just that clip, so just fast forward to approx 4:20)

Here's a thought (on award shows in general). Why don't they have the host do those voice overs when the winners walk up on stage? I guess I noticed it last night because the funny commentary seemed really out of place. And I always gripe that I don't understand the point of the host anyway. If they were the ones doing the voice overs, their presence would be more necessary on the show.

No Joke. Emmy Nominations.

Mad Men, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, Justified - I love you all. And even the shows I don't watch, I'm confident your nomination is well-deserved (except that Beau Bridges' Brothers & Sisters nod. Seriously?)

Ok. Drama cataegories, you can go sit over there in the corner. You're good. I've got beef with the comedy nominations though. MAJOR BEEF.

There are more comedies besides Modern Family, The Office and 30 Rock. And Glee wasn't even that funny this season.

Have they ever seen Community or Bored to Death? I literally LOL every single episode. And don't all my friends love It's Always Sunny in Philedelphia? Curb Your Enthusiasm? I mean, people even like Cougar Town, but Courtney Cox's buddy Matt gets nominated for playing himself on Episodes? Really? Even newbie Happy Endings has caught a spot on my DVR!

I get it. The shows that were nominated are good. But geeeeeeeez I am so sick of seeing Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey at every stinkin award show. I'm rooting for Big Bang Theory by default.

Emmy 2010 Recap. Success.

Okay, I know that the Emmy's was like forever ago (really, only a few days, cut me some slack people!) but I'm finally pulling together my thoughts/reactions from the show (that I actually had to DVR and watch on Monday since I was jammin out to She and Him at Loufest on Sunday instead...).

Emmy opening number. Omg, I die: Anything that involves Jon Hamm backing it up is fine by me. This was just brilliant.
 

Dear Jim Parsons, I adore you. #bigbang #emmys: So happy he won. Isn't he just adorable?

Oh and NPH. you're freakin perfect. #emmys: That zing to Jimmy Fallon? "I'd like the thank the academy for allowing a gay man to host two years in a row." Followed by the snarkiest little smile. Like I said, freakin perfect. 

What a great year in drama... #emmys #ilovemontages: I love montages. That is the truth. However, I was about to tweet that this year's were a little lacking.... until I saw the drama one. What a fantastic year in drama! Not only did we see the end of heavy-hitters like Lost and 24, but we got stellar performances from Dexter, Mad Men and Grey's Anatomy (which, by the way, when they showed that clip of the shooting in the montage, I stopped breathing. Again). 

Is it bad I wanted every guy in the lead actor in a drama to win... except Hugh Laurie #emmys: (Sidennote: I'm sure he's a great guy, but I've never watched House, nor do I intend to. No matter how great it is, there are enough procedural hospital dramas on TV.) Bryan Cranston. Jon Hamm. Matthew Fox. Kyle Chandler. Michael C. Hall. I seriously would have taken any of these guys for the win. 

The island, it was mythical and in the end they died. I didn't understand it but I tried. #lost #emmys: (with a correction from my pal @AmbikaBehal)

Ricky Gervais kills it every time.#emmys: Beers for the audience? Thank you very much. Can he host the Globes again please?

TV is makin a comeback. Lead actor in miniseries/movie = movie stars. #emmys: For such a long time, TV has been considered the ugly stepchild to film. Movie stars > TV stars, right? Wrong. Take a look at these nominees: Ian McKellen, Jeff Bridges, Michael Sheen, Dennis Quaid, and (winner) Al Pacino. All bonafide movie stars who took time out to come do telelvision. Thanks to cable, it looks like the ugly stepchild is getting a makeover.

Other random musings:

• Jimmy Fallon, you did a decent job. You let the shows and the stars shine. Way to go, kiddo. 
• Do I think Lost got snubbed? Nah. I would have loved to see Terry O'Quinn pick up a prize for his John Locke/MIB portrayal though. I only wish his performance could be judged based on series instead of just season. Seeing the character transformations he went through..... man, that guy is just awesome. 
• This may be morbid, but I thought more important people died this year? That memorium was kinda dull. 
• The girl from The Good Wife? No way, Jose. She should not have won Best Supporting. Every time I watch that show, I think of what a bad actress and annoying character she is.... Lame. 

Overall, Emmy's 2010 = Success.

This year's broadcast was, hands down, the best awards show I have ever seen. From the opening number, to NPH's final send off, I was completely entertained and smiling ear to ear. Only problem was, because everything was so great- it made it very difficult for me to gather my thoughts, or even choose my favorite moments. But, here they are-

The top TEN things about Emmys 2009. 

Neil Patrick Harris

If you enjoyed the broadcast this year, you can thank NPH. Not only did he host, but he was the producer as well. He has said he wanted to be more involved creatively; he wanted to be on stage more often; we wanted to guide viewers through the show. He did it, and did an amazing job. You know what I think? NPH should host everything. And I'm not the only one. Past awards show hosts Jeff Probst, Ricky Gervais, and John Stewart ALL gave him props. So there. 

Black, square-framed, nerd glasses. 

Simon Baker, Justin Timberlake, Dana Delaney... everyone was wearing them. 

A sense of 'community'

Glenn Close was the one you said it- what a privilege it was to be part of this 'community,' and you could feel the sentiment all night. It didn't feel like a competition, it felt like a celebration of all things television. 

Oscar's opening number wins an Emmy

"The first opening number written for a wolverine" was amazing at this year's Oscars. Don't remember it? Imagine Hugh Jackman and surprise guest Anne Hathaway singing and dancing as they talk about the year in movies.

Michael Emerson

I have been waiting patiently for Mr. Emerson to get the props he deserves for playing the uber-creppy, uber-manipulative Benjamin Linus on Lost. What he does on that show is seriously intense. 

Montages

Loved them (especially the Variety one). I want to download them and watch them over and over!

PC-guy voiceovers

NPH had told Ellen DeGeneres last week that he did not want those lame voiceovers when people won (ie "This is their second nomination and first win..."). His remedy? Get the PC guy (from the Mac commercials) to say silly, and often false, things about the winners as they approached the stage. Was it funny? Aw, hell yeah. It certainly helped that the Mac-guy was in the audience (Justin Long is Drew Barrymore's sometime boy toy). 

Kristin Chenoweth

I am about to tell you something that makes me look insane, but it is completely true. When they announced Kristin, I jumped up off my couch and screamed "yes, yes, yes!" while jumping up and down in my living room. I had goosebumps. I was tearing up before she even got on stage. 

In case you don't know who this girl is, let me help you out. Chenoweth earned her Emmy playing the absolutley lovely Olive on the best show that no longer exists- Pushing Daisies. The first season was cut short by the Writer's Strike, and it failed to gain momentum for its second season. Imagine the crime-fighting group of Ned (a piemaker), Olive (a waitress at The Pie Hole restaurant), PI Emerson Cod, and Ned's childhood sweetheart Chuck. Oh, and Ned can touch people to bring them back to life. Oh, and one of those 'dead' people is Chuck. Throw in an amazing narrator, bright colors, synchronized swimming, and occasional musical numbers performed by the beautiful Chenoweth, and you have the most magical, the most beautiful hour of television I have ever seen. 

Obviously, to say I have strong feelings about this show is an understatement. And to see Kristin on that stage that was amazing. I wish I could use Ned's magical gift to help Daisies rise from the dead. :(

Emmy Snubs and Surprises

Looks like made for TV movies will have their day in the sun after all.

The Academy had originally planned to cut eight of the awards from the telecast- pretaping them and then editing them- to save time. After uproar from, well, pretty much everyone, they- surprise!- changed their mind. Looks like we will be seeing a lot more of Drew Barrymore (Grey Gardens) on Emmy night.

Emmy nominations!

So it has been forever since I last posted. Trust me, I am aware of that. I promise I will get back into it as soon as my regular line up of shows starts again (with the ABDC premiere on August 9th! yes!). But for now, I couldn't resist posting some of my thoughts on the Emmy nominees.

Actor in a Comedy Series: Jim Parsons as Sheldon on TBBT. Alec will probably win. But anyone who has seen TBBT knows Parsons is comedic genius.
Actress in a Comedy Series: Christina Applegat as Samantha on Samantha Who? I’ll admit. I do not even watch this show. But I am sick of Tina Fey winning every year. Plus I don’t think ABC should have cancelled Applegate’s show and this would be a nice slap in the face.
Actor in a Drama Series: Jon Hamm as Don Draper on Mad Men or Michael C Hall as Dexter on Dexter or Bryan Cranston as Walter on Breaking Bad. Please don’t ask me to choose.
Actress in a Drama Series: Elisabeth Moss as Peggy on Mad Men. Sally Field is a close second. The Walker kids had her in all sorts of drama this season and she handled it beautifully, but Mad Men is a better show and Moss deserves the accolades.
Animated Program: Robot Chicken because I like Seth Green.
Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series: 30 Rock. If five of their actors are nominated, that means something right?
Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series: True Blood. Since TB got left out of a lot this year, you gotta give ‘em this one.
Outstanding Choreography: Anything but Mia Michaels.
Outstanding Comedy Series: HIMYM. Hands down.
Outstanding Drama Series: Dexter, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, AND Lost? Win-win situation here.
Guest Actor in a Comedy: While I love love love Mr. Hamm, I gotta give it up to JT on SNL.
Guest Actor in a Drama: Jimmy Smits as Prado on Dexter was super creepy. He wins.
Guest Actress in a Comedy: Tina Fey as Sarah Palin on SNL better win. She changed the show, politics, pop culture…
Reality Host: Tom Bergeron of DWTS is a brilliant live host.
Main Title Design: Dexter is my all time fave, but since it isn’t nominated, my second all time fave True Blood better take it.
Reality Competittion: While I love DWTS, Top Chef and Project Runway feature way more talented contestants.
Reality Program: Dog Whisperer. I doubt it will win, but I can hope.
Supporting Actor in a Comedy: NPH for HIMYM. Duh.
Supporting Actor in a Drama: Michael Emerson rules as Ben Linus on Lost.
Supporting Actress in a Comedy: Please give it to Chenoweth for Pushing Daisies. It will forever be one of the greatest shows I have ever seen on television and ABC is so stupid for taking it away from me! She is a dream!
Supporting Actress in a Drama: Sandra and Chandra’s characters on Grey’s both evolved so much this season.

Emmy madness

My week is insane and I am missing a lot of TV. I need some catch up time. But here are some Emmy thoughts..

With the exception of the million John Adams wins and one Pushing Daisies directorial nod, I didn't really like any of the winners. Not enough love for Pushing Daisies and Dexter, the two most original shows on television right now. Great job, Emmy pickers.
