Golden Globes 2013 Surprises & My Picks to Win

Golden Globe nominations have been released and there is obviously too much good TV out nowadays. Forget 10 Oscar nominees, we need 10 TV nominees!!

Best Television Series — Drama
Surprised to see: Game of Thrones and Mad Men left off the list after what was arguably the two's best seasons.
My pick to win: Breaking Bad, just because it's the last season. Otherwise, it's too hard to choose between the nominated shows.

Best Television Series — Comedy Or Musical
Surprised to see: First of all, 'comedyor musical'? Can we throw out the 'or musical' category? Glee is a comedy. Smash and Nashville are dramas. I don't care whether or not they have music. Period. As for nominees, I wish I live to see the day that Community or Happy Endings get some love. And that Ben & Kate, The Mindy Project and Up All Night become big hits.
My pick to win: Girls. Girls. Girls.

Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series – Drama
No surprises here.
My pick to win: I know not everyone loved it, but I think Steve Buscemi killed it on Boardwalk Empire this year. He was delusional, desperate and perfect. More likely that it'll go to Cranston or Lewis though.

Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series – Drama
Surprised to see: Connie Britton? For serious? I know people are obsessed with her.... but I just can't. I liked her on Spin City? Is that acceptable? Anyway, I think Monica Potter is doing award-worthy work on Parenthood and it is a shame she isn't nominated. Does this season count for next year?
My pick to win: Don't like/watch any of these. Claire Danes will win probably.

Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series — Comedy Or Musical
Surprised to see: I know Julia Louis-Dreyfus is an awards' show darling, but I don't think she is that great on Veep. Am I alone on this?
My pick to win: Dunham.

Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series — Comedy Or Musical
Surprised to see: Baldwin, just because I'm sick of him and 30 Rock
My pick to win: Louis.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Surprised to see: ALL these categories lumped together. It's ridiculous! How can I even choose?!
My pick(s) to win: If we're talking comedy - Max or Eric are always a joy to watch. For drama - I would have liked to see a whole new list of nominees including any of the Mad Men guys (particularly Jared Harris or Vincent Kartheiser), Jack Hutson from Boardwalk Empire or of course Peter Dinklage from Game of Thrones for the Blackwater speech scene alone. And someday, Walter Goggins from Justified please.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Surprised to see: Again with ALL the categories. Plus, Panettiere? Are.You.Serious?
My pick to win: Can I pick NONE of these people and trade them for Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) or Lena Headey (Game of Thrones).

And just a general rant on the whole mini series category.... What a mess! I'm sick of shows that get cancelled entering themselves as a mini-series. You are not a mini-series. You got cancelled. And Downton Abbey WAS a mini series, swept it, and then decided to do a second season and become a series. And American Horror Story is sort of a series, but it changes every season so now it's a mini-series. Ugh.

Golden Globe nominations are in!

I'm not going to bother you with the full list of nominations, just give my pick for winner... and who I think will actually win.

Best Drama:
I vote for Boardwalk Empire, and think it will probably win too. What? No Dexter or Mad Men? I know, I love both the shows, but neither of their most recent seasons were as good as the last.

Best Comedy:
I don't really watch any of these shows except Glee and I honestly don't think it deserves a Golden Globe win (it's fun, but this season isn't award-worthy in my opinion...). Who will win? Modern Family or 30 Rock. Don't they always win?

Best Actor, Drama:
While Mad Men might not have had the most stellar season overall, I loooooved Jon Hamm this season. He took Don Draper to a whole new place; he was like a different character. I applaud you, Mr. Hamm, but honestly think this is anyone's game. All these guys are awesome (except Hugh Laurie. I don't like House).

Best Actress, Drama: Jersey from Coyote Ugly is nominated for a Golden Globe? Ridiculous. I have no further words here.

Best Actor, Comedy: Jim Parsons, always Jim Parsons. I think he is hilarious. But Alec Baldwin always wins. And this is Steve Carell's last year on The Office.

Best Actress, Comedy: Anyone's game... except Lea Michelle. She is arguably the least funny girl on Glee. (The same goes with Matthew Morrison, who got a nod for Best Actor in a comedy. Artie, Brittany, Sue, Finn.... all funny. Mr. Schu and Rachel? Not so much).

Best Supporting Actor: Chris Colfer is having his time in the limelight on Glee this season (part of the reason I think the show isn't as good as the past.... too much focus on Kurt). My vote is for him.

Best Supporting Actress: Sue, duh. (But why don't they separate Comedy and Drama for supporting roles? Mrs. Schroeder shouldn't have to compete with Miss Sylvester).

And most importantly, who do I think got snubbed? LOST! Bored to Death! Fringe! Abed on Community! Treme!

Golden Globes Top 10

1. Paul McCartney: Any one that really knows me, knows that I really do not like the Beatles. I did, however, love the way Sir McCartney introduced the nominees for Best Animated Film. "Animation is not just for ids- it's also for adults who take drugs." Plus, the Brit being there allowed for a great joke from host Ricky Gervais, who said Paul had to ride coach on the flight over because 'he spent quite a bit of money last year' (in reference to his costly divorce). Magnificent.

2. Colin Farrell: Gervais went off on a tangent, talking about how the Globes doesn't care about stereotypes like the one that "all Irishmen are drunk, swear-y hell-raisers." He pauses before saying, "Please welcome Colin Farrell." Colin handles it well, sighing and saying, "Ah, I used to be a stereotype."

3. Mel Gibson: I suppose all of these are really a credit to host Gervais than the celebs themselves but anyway... Gervais, a known drinker, quips, "I like a drink as much as the next man... unless the next man is Mel Gibson." Que the 'Oh snaps!'

4. Mo'nique: It is still weird for me to see the comedian and past Charm School host sharing the limelight with 'serious' actors, but her acceptance speech was perhaps the most heartfelt and eloquent of the night. Sure the call to action against domestic abuse is great, but what really go me was her shout out to her husband. She says that she looked at him when she was 14 years old and said, 'Baby, one day we're gonna be stars.' To which he replied, 'You first.' Awwwww.

5. Meryl Streep: "In my long career, I've played so many great women, I'm basically getting mistaken for one." That is why people love her. Oh and PS she set a Golden Globe record for her 7th win.

6. James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow: The directors (Avatar and The Hurt Locker, both major frontrunners for Best Director and Best Picture) used to be married. Awk-ward.

7. Wins for Mad Men, Michael C Hall, John Lithgow, Glee: Rightly so. Well done my friends, well done.

8. Martin Scorsese: The Cecil B DeMille Award winner got a super introduction from his pal Leo. Mr. DiCaprio likened the director to big names like DaVinci and Beethoven, and said, "In a thousand years, when people look back at the history of film, they will remember the name Martin Scorsese." Oh and my favorite remark? "If the roles were reversed, DeMille would be honored to receive the Martin Scorsese Award." Bromance.

9. Robert Downey Jr: In his 'acceptance' speech, he decided 'not' to thank anyone else because the 'needed him' (especially to hold up against Avatar at the box office!). "And I'm certainly not going to thank my wife!" Hilarious.

10. Julia Roberts: "NBC, you're in the toilet," she says to Billy Bush on the red carpet. "Well, you might not be in the toilet, but you've got problems!" Epic. Win.

Golden Globes nominees! and my picks!

Who loves awards shows? Me! Me! Me! There is nothing better than camping out on your couch on a Sunday night with pizza, popcorn, and ice cream (what? It’s a long show!), and watching your favorite stars strut across the stage. Plus, I love the montages.

But you know what I love even more than the show itself? Getting the list of nominees and picking my favorites. In that brief moment, your ‘winners’ still have a shot at being the real winners. And even if my dreams are crushed come January 17, at least my favorites will be memorialized forever here at Addicted to Television:

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA Big Love (HBO)Dexter (Showtime)House (Fox)Mad Men (AMC)True Blood (HBO)
Dexter, True Blood, and Mad Men are three of my absolute favorite shows, so it is great to see them all nominated! For the winner, I’m going to have to go with Mad Men (no worries, Dexter fans. You’ll get your awards in the acting category!). Mad Men not only put out great performances this year, but had huge storylines – JFK shooting, Betty finding Don’s true identity, a guy getting his foot run over with a lawn mower…

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – COMEDY OR MUSICAL 30 Rock (NBC)Entourage (HBO)Glee (FOX)Modern Family (ABC)The Office (NBC)
Duh, I’m going to pick Glee. It is probably the most original comedy out there right now. It isn’t just about a group of friends hanging out, or a family trying to get along, or a bunch of people working together- it has music! Plus, when was the last time a high school sitcom was engaging enough for adults to enjoy?

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA Simon Baker, The MentalistMichael C. Hall, DexterJon Hamm, Mad MenHugh Laurie, HouseBill Paxton, Big Love
Awards voters love Jon Hamm (as do I), but this one has to go to Michael C. Hall for his stunning performance on Dexter. This season, we saw Dex rock a baby to sleep, go to counseling with his wife, give up his bachelor pad… oh yeah, and hunt down the Trinity Killer. The highlight of the season really was the Dexter/Trinity storyline (what? You thought LaGuerta/Batista was more interesting? Good try, but no), and I’m hoping Hall and Lithgow both get recognized for it.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES –DRAMA Glenn Close, DamagesJanuary Jones, Mad MenJulianna Margulies, The Good WifeAnna Paquin, True BloodKyra Sedgwick, The Closer
January Jones, hands down. Did you know her ex-boyfriend, Ashton Kutcher, told her to quit acting? No, Asthon, you quit. January Jones was brilliant this season on Mad Men. In the span of one season, she had a baby, lost her father, went to Rome, began an affair with another man, uncovered the truth about her husband’s identity, and finally demanded a divorce and hopped on a plane to Reno. And she looked really pretty doing it too.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES –COMEDY OR MUSICAL
Alec Baldwin, 30 RockSteve Carell, The OfficeDavid Duchovny, CalifornicationThomas Jane, HungMatthew Morrison, Glee
Although I love Glee, I don’t understand Morrison’s nomination here. The show is great, but he is probably the least funny character on it. I’m gonna give this one to Carell, because I am sick of Baldwin winning all the time.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES –COMEDY OR MUSICAL Toni Collette, United States of TaraCourteney Cox, Cougar TownEdie Falco, Nurse JackieTina Fey, 30 RockLea Michele, Glee
What an honor for Lea Michele to be nominated in this category! If I had to guess, I would give it to Collette or Fey, but it would be so awesome if Michele won, wouldn’t it? The category is for comedy or musical, so why not congratulate the one nominee who covers both? Michele is hilarious as stage-brat Rachel, and man oh man, can that girl sing. (Speaking of, I wonder if we will get a musical performance from the Glee cast. Wouldn’t that be a treat!)

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES,MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION Michael Emerson, LostNeil Patrick Harris, How I Met Your MotherWilliam Hurt, DamagesJohn Lithgow, DexterJeremy Piven, Entourage
I hate that I am passing on Lost’s sole nomination, especially since Emerson was amazing as evil (or not evil?) Ben Linus this past year, but the award has to go to Lithgow for his creepy turn as the Trinity Killer on Dexter. From the moment we saw his bare buttocks in the first scene of the premiere, we couldn’t look away. And in his final moments, admit it, you felt some sympathy for the guy, didn’t you? Too bad that feeling didn’t last long. Now we can all hate him again.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN ASERIES, MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION Jane Adams, HungRose Byrne, DamagesJane Lynch, GleeJanet McTeer, Into the StormChloe Sevigny, Big Love
Jane Lynch might play the same snappy alpha-female in everything (40 Year Old Virgin, Role Models, Talladega Nights, Two and a Half Men, Party Down), but the cutthroat high school cheerleading coach kills every scene on Glee. I would try to say something clever here, but nothing would be as great as what Sue would say. That’s why she is nominated for a Golden Globe and I’m not.

And a few thoughts…
I’m not going to call these ‘snub’s, but there were a few shows left of the ballot that surprised me.

Where was all the love for Breaking Bad and Big Bang Theory? Both shows are putting out stellar seasons, not to mention having one of the best dramatic actors (Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad) and one of the best comedic actors (Jim Parsons, Big Bang) on TV right now.

And my all-time favorite show, Lost was really overlooked this year. True, the last season was confusing (even for me), but it is consistently one of the most thought provoking shows on television. I am hoping that they will be recognized next year, following their final season this spring.
