Good News/Bad News for some of my favorite shows on the bubble.

via TV Guide

Alcatraz (Fox)Wrapped March 26; aired Mondays at 9/8c

The Good News: Fox has kept Fringe alive this long — maybe executives will be generous to another J.J. Abrams drama with a small-but-passionate fan base? And they already canceledTerra Nova, which theoretically helps.
The Bad News: The Voice kind of clobbered itand worse, viewers flat-out rejected this island mystery. Less than half the audience who watched the premiere tuned in for the finale to learn the secret of those disappearing, reappearing prisoners.

Awake (NBC) Thursdays at 10/9c

The Good News:
Series creator Kyle Killen, he of the well-liked-but-short-lived Lone Star, is a guy with ideas! A guy creative people flock to! So what if he makes shows for broadcast that would be better off on cable and not enough folks come to watch?
The Bad News:
To be fair, airing it at the end of NBC's low-rated Thursday-night comedy block — and immediately after the night's biggest loser, Up All Night — hasn't been a great fit for the somber drama about a man dealing with tremendous loss. Ratings are abysmal.

Community (NBC) Thursdays at 8/7c
The Good News: After a more than three-month hiatus, Community returned in March to its biggest audience since October 2010. And relative to NBC's Thursday-night lineup, it's pretty coolcoolcool.
The Bad News:
NBC's Thursday-night lineup is a bust, led by a flailing-in-its-eighth season The Office, so any ratings fetes enjoyed by Community are still small in the bigger picture — and it will be measured against some strong comedy pilots in contention, among them Justin Kirk-frontedAnimal Kingdom and White House comedy 1600 Penn, starring (Bill Pullman) and Book of Mormon's Josh Gad.

Fringe (Fox)
Fridays at 9/8c

The Good News: Fox has always loved this show, having rescued it from the bubble twice already. Since the network has already canceled Terra Nova and House, it may want to hang on to this cult favorite for a final (probably shortened) season.
The Bad News:
Fox has a couple of buzzy new drama pilots, including a serial killer story from Kevin Williamson starring Kevin Bacon, so the network may decide to clear the bench. Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly put it pretty plainly in January that the network's generous pocketbook might be closing when it comes to the costly Fringe: "We're not in the business of losing money," he said.

Parenthood (NBC)
Wrapped Feb. 28; aired Tuesdays at 10/9c
The Good News: This touching family drama is a critical darling with a small-but-loyal fan base, and NBC will need a couple veteran dramas to anchor its fall schedule. Parenthood is neck and neck with Law & Order: SVU to be the second-highest-rated drama at NBC behind the already-renewed Smash.
The Bad News:
We're running low on Kleenex over here!

Up All Night (NBC)Wrapped April 12; last aired Thursdays at 9:30/8:30c
The Good News: NBC pulled out all the stops trying to make this one work. After it did so-so numbers on Wednesday, they decided to give it another push, slotting it behind The Office and hoping that viewers would take a second look at Will Arnett and Christina Applegate playing new parents, and Maya Rudolph as a crazy diva talk show host.
The Bad News:
The audience actually shrunk in the move to Thursday! NBC already has a few low-rated pedigree comedies it probably wants to keep (30 RockCommunityParks and Recreation) and this one has the fewest viewers.

A puzzle for you.

Guesssssss who has Fringe Season 2 being delivered from Netflix today!?

Okay, that was too easy. It's me!

I'm so pumped to finally get back in to the show! I only wish it would have came over the holiday break when I spent approximately 4 hours a day watching Friends, Chopped or some stupid movie On Demand. Nevertheless, I'm so happy to be reunited with Olivia, Peter, Walter and Astrid. Oh and Broyles, too!

Want the good news or the bad news?

Good news first.
TV Guide reports that the following favorites of mine will get a full season:
Community
FlashForward
One Tree Hill
Glee

Rejoice!

And now, the bad news.
TV Guide also predicts that Fringe, one of my absolute, favorite shows, is in danger. Here is my plea to Fox-

PLEASE move Walter and Peter and Olivia and Broyles and that freaky bald dude back to Tuesdays where they belong. Fringe is such a brilliant show, but it can't compete with the Thursday night lineup of Grey's, The Office/30 Rock, CSI, and Supernatural. I know your Thursday night ratings are up, but the shows audience is declining. Have you forgotten that last year, when the show was on Tuesdays, you scored the highest ratings for the 18-49 year old demo of any new show on television?

MOVE. IT. BACK.

9.16.2009

the freakiest show on TV is back.

Fringe begins its second season this Thursday on Fox, and it is one of the most anticipated returns this fall (judging by this hot EW cover at least). The series struggled a bit in the beginning, but by the end of the season it was averaging 8.8 million viewers a week. Now, that’s nothing compared to fellow freshman series The Mentalist, which averaged 16.3 million- and even beat out ratings monster CSI some weeks (!). However, my favorite Fringers did win over a popular crowd—it was the number one show in the 18-49 year old demo. And the show gained a HUGE following after their mind-blowing season finale- Spock?! World Trade Center?! Peter is dead?!- and they are hoping all the newbies will boost their ratings this fall.

In case you don’t watch, picture this- an equal parts scifi/procedural crime drama/comedy about an FBI agent (Olivia), a crazy scientist with memory loss issues and a love of slurpies (Walter), and his son (Peter aka Pacey aka Joshua Jackson) investigating freaky-deaky attacks by ‘the Pattern’. They are assisted by the coolest FBI agents around- Broyles and Charlie Francis, lab geek Aster, and a cow. The probable villain? Technology tycoon Massive Dynamics- ran by Robot-armed Nina and Walters old pal William Bell (aka Spock).

Confused? That is normal. JJ Abrams says his ambition with Fringe was to create "a show about relatable characters and sober human truths that could also inspire, like, an absolutely insane drunk-in-a-college-dorm-room conversation about seriously crazy shit."

Done, and done.

This season will be stellar, promising "bigger answers than you ever got before" as episodes unfold. Already on the radar? The return on William Bell in the October 8th episode, a new bad guy from ‘over there’, and more on the Observers, Broyles, and possibly Dr.Jones (who we last saw being cut in half trying to cross over to the alternate reality).

Another popular fan theory? Perhaps the Walter from the other side will be making his way over to our world to find his kidnapped son. Wouldn’t you be a bit peeved if your alt-reality self came over and took your kid because his died? Yep, that’s what I thought.

Fringe and Twitter = love.

So my second favorite alternate universe-themed show (first has to go to Lost, although that is more time-travel...), premieres September 17th on Fox and I cannot wait. The finale last season was intense- Peter is really dead and the guy I know and love is his alt-reality self!? Wtf.

And the season premiere promises to be just as shocking. Word on the street is that one main character dies, two kiss and another faces medical uncertainty. Dun dun duuunnn.

As for the kissing, there are no significant Peter-Olivia scenes in the premiere- sad day. Instead he spends some quality screen time with new cast member Meghan Markle (playing Agent Amy Jessup) and Olivia's sister Rachel (who we saw chemistry with last season).

Don't watch Fringe? You should. While you probably can't catch up on the whole freaky first season in the next couple days, make sure to catch the replay of the finale on Fox this Thursday. The network is introducing "tweet-peats" of the show (they are doing it with Glee also). The episodes will be accompanied with messages from producers and cast members using Twitter. You can follow online or on the bottom of the television screen and see commentary, revealing behind-the-scenes details and answers to fans' questions. The Fringe 'tweet-peat' will feature producers and stars Joshua Jackson and John Nolble.

Thank you, Twitter for uniting Josh and I. Think he will mind if I propose to him via a tweet?

Fall Schedule!

So all this week I have been adding fall premiere dates to my calendar and it is starting to get overwhelming! These are just the shows I want to watch (I guess my HIMYM love will have to be pushed off for hiatus’. I just don’t have time!)

Sunday, 8/9
ABDC, MTV 8pm

Sunday, 8/16
Mad Men, AMC 9pm

Monday, 8/31
Greek, ABC Family 8pm

Wednesday, 9/9
Glee, Fox 8pm

Monday, 9/14
OTH, CW 7pm

Thursday, 9/17
Community, NBC 8:30pm
Fringe, Fox 8pm

Monday, 9/21
DWTS, ABC 7pm

Thursday, 9/24
Flashforward, ABC 7pm
Grey’s, ABC 8pm

Sunday, 9/27
Brothers and Sisters, ABC 9pm
Desperate Housewives, ABC 8pm
Dexter, Showtime 8pm

So you might be thinking, “Geez, Danielle. How in the world am I going to make this work?” Well, I will tell you. This is what I suggest.

Mondays
Watch OTH at 7, followed by Greek at 8pm. DVR or catch DWTS online in time for the results shows on Tuesdays. CW and ABC Family both have sucky video players and it is hard to find episodes online.

Tuesdays
DWTS day. I never cared much about the results show, but you can watch the show from the night before on DVR or online before you find out who gets kicked off!

Wednesdays
Have a nice peaceful evening with Glee at 8pm. Oh, and catch up from some of that leftover Sunday television!

Thursdays
I’ll give first preference to the new shows- Flashforward at 7pm and Community at 8:30pm because they will need the ratings to survive. Although, that does give you an awkward half hour break… sheesh. If you have to watch one thing that night pick Grey’s at 8pm because it is by far the most popular and what people will be talking about. DVR Fringe or watch it online. It has too much suspense for commercials anyway!

Sundays
Personally, I am watching ABDC at 8pm, followed by Brothers and Sisters at 9pm. I love Desperate but MTV’s video player is so slow. I can easily find Desperate online somewhere. The same goes for cable shows Mad Men and Dexter. Catch them later in the week.

Hope you weren’t planning to have a life this fall!

FRINGE

Of course Walter would be the author of ZFT. I've come to expect nothing less from my favorite mad scientist.

Last night's episode of Fringe was really plot-centric. Lately there have been more and more personal stories, Walter wisecracks, and Olivia/Harris disputes, but last night really focused on the issue at hand. And Olivia's 'power'?! Do you think it was all rigged by Jones, or did she really turn the lights off and stop the bomb?

2.10.2009

new episode of FRINGE tonight

Tonight is an all new episode of Fringe on Fox and I strongly recommend you check this show out! It just started this fall, and while it hasn't had as much success as The Mentalist (CBS), or as much controversy at 90210 (CW), I think it's holding its own in the batch of new shows.

It is a sci-fi show created by JJ Abrams and that man is seriously a genius (think Cloverfield, Heroes, Alias, and of course, LOST). Plus it has Pacey!

Anyway, the show is great. It always opens with some really mysterious event and, believe me, you will want to keep watching to figure out what the hell just happened.

Check it out tonight on Fox at 8pm and let me know what you think!
